What it feels like

Reading the room, traveller by traveller

  • First-timers

Non-negotiable; just go at 8am opening to beat the heat and the crowds.

  • Multigenerational

Doable for fit grandparents but the uneven rock, climb and lack of shade are a real strain — pace it and bring water.

  • As a couple

Stirring together, but the crush undercuts romance; the last 90 minutes before close is calmer and prettier.

Best time
Right at 8am opening or the final 90 minutes before close to dodge heat and crowds.
Getting there
Acropoli metro (Line 2), then the south-slope entrance; or walk up from Plaka/Thissio.
Booking
Buy a timed e-ticket in advance; the €30 combo ticket also covers entry plus six other sites.
Accessibility
A wheelchair lift exists on the north side but the surface is rough; not suitable for those who can't manage uneven, slippery marble and inclines.
