Is Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center worth it as a couple?
Worth itAs a couple
As a couple, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center works.
It's a glimpse of a modern, confident Athens far from the ancient-ruins script: a sloping green roof you walk up for Saronic Gulf views, a constant free events programme, and fountains and lawns kids genuinely love. It's the rare Athens stop that rewards design lovers and families more than it does ruins-focused first-timers — that's the fit to judge it by. The catch: it's a 20-30 minute tram or bus ride out to Kallithea, the surrounds are unremarkable, and on a still summer day the open esplanade bakes.
Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, opened 2016; houses the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera (1,400-seat auditorium) in a 170,000 m² park. · en.wikipedia.org
The sloping planted roof carries 1,440 trees and a 10,000 m² photovoltaic canopy generating ~1.5 MW; awarded LEED Platinum in 2016. · archdaily.com
