For nature & scenery, Castle Island is hit or miss.
A genuinely local spot — Southie families, the harborwalk loop, planes banking into Logan overhead, and Sullivan's hot dogs and fried clams make it a low-key, free, very Boston afternoon. The catch: it's residential South Boston and a hike from downtown without a car, the fort tours are limited and seasonal, and the 'beach' is modest.
