For history & culture, Almudena Cathedral is hit or miss.
Worth the quick pairing with the palace: the neo-Gothic interior with its bold pop-art-colored ceiling is unusual, and the dome viewpoint gives a good city panorama. The catch is that next to Spain's great medieval cathedrals it feels new and a little soulless — most visitors give it ten minutes.
