Why we say this
Insider secrets & local vibes
The Coastal Trail is a cliff-top walk through dark cypress and open grass with 30-mile views up and down the California coast — postcard-perfect framing of the Golden Gate and Marin Headlands.
You can clamber down through the concrete foundations of Adolph Sutro's vast 1894 saltwater bathhouse — you'll even spot an original ladder from the structure.
A quiet cliff-top walk to the labyrinth and back, ending with coffee at the Lands End Lookout café, is a low-key romantic afternoon away from the tourist core.
On a budget
Completely free — no ticket, just parking — and one of the highest-payoff things to do in the city for nothing.
With kids
The main trail is short (about 2.9 miles round trip) and not technical, good for older kids; keep little ones well back from the unfenced cliff edges and slippery ruins.
What people say
Straight from the reviews
“a cliff-top walk through dark cypress and open grass and 30-mile views up and down the California coast”
Late afternoon into sunset on a clear day; go early or midday if fog is forecast.
Getting there
Start at the Lands End Lookout parking lot off Point Lobos Avenue, near the Sutro Baths and Cliff House.
Hours
Open daily, dawn to dusk; allow 2–3 hours to take in the viewpoints and ruins.
Booking
No ticket required; the trail and parking are free.
Accessibility
The main Coastal Trail is wide but has stairs and uneven sections; the Lookout visitor center, café, and restrooms are accessible, but the ruins and labyrinth are not.
